The problem
People already knew who he was. The sporting career had ended and he had begun serious work in an entirely different industry.
Almost none of that was visible. His profile carried a company logo and very little else. There was no explanation of what he actually did, who he helped, what he was responsible for, or how he thought about any of it.
The visitor was being asked to work the story out on their own. With a recognized name, that is a particular risk. People keep reading someone through the career they already know until they are given a clear reason not to.
What needed to change
The new work had to be described in the present tense, in enough detail for a stranger to understand the responsibility involved.
The sporting career could not simply be deleted. It is real, it is the source of a great deal of what makes him credible, and it is the reason many people arrive at the profile in the first place. But it had to stop being the whole answer.
What I did
I positioned him around the current work first, with the sporting career carried as evidence and context rather than as the story.
I rebuilt the profile and Experience section so the transition was explained plainly, without turning it into a dramatic reinvention narrative.
I wrote and published in a voice that stayed recognisably his. That mattered more than usual here. People who actually know him read this profile, and writing that suddenly sounded polished would simply not have sounded like him.
What changed
Someone who arrives because of the name he is known for now finds an explanation of what he is doing today, and can see the responsibility he carries in the new industry rather than guessing at it.
The judgment
Two temptations here, and both were declined.
The first was to lead with the sporting career, because it is the part that gets attention. Attention was never the problem. Recognition without a current explanation leaves the reader with the old story.
The second was to turn the transition into a motivational story. That would have pulled the positioning away from the work he actually wanted to be understood for.
A name people recognize can still leave the current work unexplained.
If that is your situation, tell me what someone finds when they look you up today.
